How Late Can You Plant Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the most popular summer fruits, according to the University of Minnesota Extension. After an initial season of growth and development, 25 to 50 plants can provide fruit for the whole family for three to five years.

Generally speaking, strawberries should be planted in the cool spring months, preferably March, April or early May, before temperatures become too high for proper growth and development. June-bearing strawberries especially need to be planted just after the threat of frost.

Test the soil of your planting site at least four to six months before planting strawberries. Strawberries prefer soils with pH levels between 5.8 and 6.2, according to the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. Incorporate plenty of organic matter and fertilize as needed.

Strawberries need at least six hours of direct sun each day, although 10 hours is ideal. They are also very sensitive to both drought and overwatering, so be sure that soil is well-drained. Do not plant strawberries in soil sites that have previously held tomatoes, eggplant, peppers or potatoes.
