How to Plant Strawberries in Pots

By Karen Ellis

You don't have to have a huge growing space to plant a few strawberry plants. Gardening in pots is the ultimate way you can indulge your green thumb, when you live in an apartment or condominium with just a small balcony or patio. It's also a great way to enjoy fresh strawberries through the summer months if you have room, but don't have the time to care for a large garden.

Choose your container(s). Strawberry plants can be very decorative, working double duty as ornamental plants. Choose containers that complement the exterior of your home. Of course, simple clay pots match all décors. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole at the bottom. Strawberries can get root rot if they sit in water too long.

Purchase a commercial potting soil from your local nursery or home improvement center. There is no need to mix your own soil, since the bagged blends drain well and work fine for strawberry plants.

Place rocks, marbles or broken pottery at the bottom of your pot. This will help keep the soil from running out the drain hole when you water.

Fill the pot with soil, up to 2 inches from the top, leaving room for the roots and soil of your strawberry plant.

Place the plant in the pot and cover the roots, snuggly. Make sure the soil does not go on top of the plant.

Move your potted strawberry plant to its new home location. Water thoroughly.

Check your plants often to make sure they do not dry out. Keep the soil moist, but not sopping wet.

You can also grow strawberries in hanging containers, or in specially designed pots with openings throughout the pot, sometimes called strawberry pots.
Strawberries are perennial plants, producing fruit each year. If you live in a cold climate, bring them inside or cover them, when the temperature drops.
