How to Feed Everbearing Strawberry Plants

Everbearing Strawberry plants are known for their productions of fruit throughout spring, summer and autumn. They fruit two, if not three, times and stay green until the winter months. The healthiest strawberry plants start out with a rich, organic soil but all plants must be fed regularly. Fort Laramie and Quinault are popular types of Everbearing Strawberry plants that produce few runners and are ideal for pots.

Fertilize before the plants flower. Everbearing strawberry plants should be fertilized in the spring after planting but before the plants begin producing buds.

Apply fertilizer. Use a well-balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 (equal parts nitrogen, phosphorous and Potassium) for all-around healthy plants. Apply directly to the soil after following the mixing instructions on the container.

Water the plant. Pour water over the soil to bring the fertilizer down to the roots. This is important, otherwise the plants will not be able to absorb the nutrients.

Fertilize again after fall harvest. This will ensure your strawberry plants remain strong through the winter and come back with full force in the spring.

Pick your strawberries as soon as they are ripe to prevent rotting and loss of nutrients.

Be careful not to over-fertilize your strawberry plants. This will cause a lot of leaf production at the expense of your fruit. Do not fertilize plants during flowering or fruiting periods.
